Thumbnail Ways To Look Like Madhuri Dixit
Views ::482

Madhuri Dixit is one of the most beautiful Indian women. A Bollywood actress by profession, Madhuri Dixit's beauty has made millions of men fall behind her. Be it acting, dancing, singing or attracting men with her beauty, Madhuri Dixit has it all under her wrap. She is one of the few gorgeous actresses in Bollywood who is growing old with grace. A successful wife and mother, Madhuri Dixit still knows how to attract attention with her million dollar smile. If you are a fan of this diva and her 'adaas', here are few ways to get a traditional Indian look like Madhuri Dixit.

Saree: Madhuri Dixit is most often seen in sarees these days. As a judge of a reality dance show, Madhuri has carried her glamorous look wearing heavily embellished sarees. Madhuri also wears salwaar kameez and western outfits, but the diva prefers the Indian look (as seen on public appearances). If you want to look like Madhuri Dixit, pick up bright coloured stone studded sarees and team them up with deep back blouses.

Thumbnail A wife should be like goddess Sita, says the Bombay High Court
Views ::609 Mumbai:  The Bombay High Court has observed that married women should take a cue from goddess Sita, who followed her husband Lord Ram even during his exile, while hearing a divorce petition on Tuesday, filed by a man on ground that his wife is unwilling to relocate to his new place of work.

"A wife should be like goddess Sita who left everything and followed her husband Lord Ram to a forest and stayed there for 14 years," a division bench of justices P B Majmudar and Anoop Mohta observed while hearing an appeal filed by an employee of the Shipping Corporation of India seeking divorce from his wife on the ground that she was not willing to shift with him to Port Blair where he was transferred.

The couple had an arranged marriage in 2000. While the applicant's wife is a resident of Mumbai, he hails from Kolkata and continued to stay in Mumbai as he had been on ship duty for five years since they tied the knot.

In 2005 when he was given a land posting at Port Blair he called upon his wife to come and stay with him but she refused following which he filed for divorce. The couple has a nine-year-old daughter.

The court during the day tried to counsel the couple saying at least for the child's sake, the duo should reunite.

While the husband agreed to reconsider, the wife shot down  any kind of settlement. The court has posted the matter for further hearing on June 21

Thumbnail Jhulan Goswami receives Padma Shri
Views ::595 Jhulan Goswami, India Women's captain, has been conferred with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, for her services to sports.

Goswami, 28, is currently the top-ranked bowler in the ICC Women's cricket rankings with 135 wickets in 114 ODIs, and she is the third on the overall all-time wicket-takers list. She made her debut as a 18-year-old and is now widely considered one of the fastest bowlers in women's cricket. In 2010, she received the Arjuna Award, the highest civilian honour for sportspersons.

Goswami is the second India woman cricketer to be awarded the Padma Shri after Diana Edulji, the first Indian Women's captain. Women contribute maximum to Indian Economy, but are still neglected
Views ::627 “Women contribute 63 percent to agricultural production, in their hands lie the welfare of the whole family and society; they are the keepers of the commons and the indigenous seed heritage of the country. Yet, they are almost completely in the unorganized sector (71%) having no assets or economic security. Even though Indian economy is growing at a rate of 9%, 52% of women of the country suffer from malnutrition; they go hungry even when the granaries are full and overflowing.” This was what was the hitting point of the two days national level consultation programme organised in Bhubaneswar by Welthungerhilfe in collaboration with Agragamee – an Odisha based organisation involved in development works and activism – to provide a voice to the women suppressed behind the culture of silence.

“Women in India make the major work force in the agricultural sector. If you take the whole of India more than 71% of women work as agricultural labourers which becomes 82% when it is confined to rural India only. That means women are doing most of the works that include sowing, weeding, harvesting, carrying etc. So much of work is done by women, but what do they get in return? This is a big question”, said one of the organising members Vidhya Das of Agragamee while presenting the issues concerning women living in rural and tribal India adding that, “the women subsidise our food produces by over 60% and contributing about one lakh crore to the agricultural economy and a total of two lakh crore to the entire Indian economy. But the benefit is going to the corporates and women still remain neglected.”

Views ::696 It is a country with a female president and where men revere female goddesses. And yet, India is far from a haven for women.

It is a country with a female president and where men revere female goddesses. And yet, India is far from a haven for women.

According to current estimates, Indian men outnumber women by nearly 40 million. That startling gender gap, activists say, is the result of gendercide. Nearly 50,000 female fetuses are aborted every month and untold numbers of baby girls are abandoned or murdered.

Mother Says She Was Tortured to Abort Twin Girls

Those seeking to maintain the status quo, meanwhile, have been aggressive.

Mitu Khurana, 34, a pediatrician and a mother trying to fight the system, said she's faced death threats for the lawsuit she has filed against her husband and her husband's family.

Khurana said her parents-in-law tricked her into eating a cake made with eggs, knowing that she was allergic to eggs. She had to go to the emergency room and at the hospital, where, Khurana said, an ultrasound determined that she was pregnant with twin girls.
Khurana claims, to ensure she miscarried, her husband and his family tortured her and deprived her of food, until she fled to her parents to give birth. When one of her daughters was 4 months old, Khurana said, her mother-in-law threw the baby down a staircase.

Trafficking for Brides

It's not just pregnant women and infant girls who face the consequences of gendercide. With men outnumbering women, some families resort to the black market and human trafficking to buy brides for their sons.

Sakina was 12 years old when she says she was sold for 10,000 rupees, or $200, and moved 1,000 miles from her home to a village in the Indian state of Haryana. She has since given birth to nine children, eight of them boys. Though Sakina herself says she was the victim of human trafficking, she said she might turn to the black market to find wives for her sons.

"In Haryana, because there are no women, I will have to pay money to marry my sons. And if I have to buy a bride, I will," she said.

A Unique Home

There is hope for young girls in India. In addition to the activists fighting against gendercide, the government and charities have set up a network of orphanages called "cradle houses."

One of them is called Unique Home. The woman who founded the orphanage, Prekash Kaur, cares for 60 girls, some just days old. Some abandoned infants are found in trash cans. Others are discreetly left in a drop box at the orphanage door.

Many of the infants, Kaur said, are "half dead" when they arrive because of the drugs their mothers have taken in an attempts to abort them.

No child is turned away from Unique Home. They live in close quarters and eat, sleep and study together. Kaur is affectionately known as "mama" and calls each child there her daughter -- girls she'll raise, protect and educate. She doesn't allow adoptions for fear that girls will again fall victim to abuse and neglect.

"It is important to empower and embolden these girls to make them stronger, so one day, when they give birth to a baby girl, they will not give into the pressure to play with nature," she said. "They should understand whatever their moms did to them, they should not do to their own daughters."

Lucy Singh, 19, has lived at Unique Home since she was one day old. She attends college and wants to be a teacher. She calls Prakash Kaur her mom, her dad, her everything.

"I feel that I'm the lucky one," she said.
