Thumbnail Match Fixing Scandal Rocks IPL : Leaked footage
Views ::231 New Delhi - Five domestic Indian Premier League (IPL) players were suspended from cricket on Tuesday after a sting operation by a local TV channel highlighted alleged fixing and corruption, sporting authorities said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the players were handed provisional suspensions until its investigations into the allegations were completed.

The five - TP Sudhindra, Mohnish Mishra, Abhinav Bali, Amit Yadav and Shalabh Srivastava - are all first-class cricketers signed to various teams in the IPL.

"The BCCI has decided to suspend these players from all cricket till preliminary investigation into the whole episode is completed," IPL commissioner Rajiv Shukla told reporters.

The inquiry will be carried out by former police officer Ravi Sawani, who has previously served in the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, Shukla added.

Hindi-language India TV showed Sudhindra, of the Deccan Chargers, allegedly agreeing to bowl pre-arranged no-balls in a local amateur match, while Kings XI Punjab player Srivastava was reportedly heard boasting he could do the same in the IPL.

The channel claimed it had taped seamer Srivastava telling its reporters he could deliver a no-ball in the IPL for one million rupees (about $18 500).

Srivastava, 30, who has played two seasons of first-class cricket for the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, denied the allegation and threatened to take the TV channel to court.

"The voice which suggests that I am ready to spot-fix is not mine," he told the Indian Express newspaper. "I am ready to clarify this to the BCCI, my team owners and the IPL governing council.

"I will definitely file a case against them."

Another Kings XI Punjab player, Yadav, was taped saying he had reason to believe that last season's IPL match against the Delhi Daredevils was fixed, but could not substantiate his claim.

Thumbnail Balaji, Gambhir guide KKR to their first win of IPL 5
Views ::135 Bangalore: An allround performance from Kolkata Knight Riders helped them to their first win of the IPL 2012 season against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday.

Batting first KKR posted a total of 165/8 replying to which RCB fell well short by 42 runs to end their innings at 123/9 at Bangalore.

The start of the match was delayed by a minor explosion due to an electric short circuit and Bangalore crowd must have expected the same from their stalwart Chris Gayle. But L Balaji and Jacques Kallis had other plans as they ran through their hosts top order reducing them to 33/5 halfway down their innings.

Balaji was the pick of the bowlers with his haul of 4/18. The delivery of the day was fittingly bowled to AB de Villiers who was clean bowled at the score of 10. It was an angled delivery and de Villiers went for a defensive stroke but the ball straightened up to remove his bails.

Kallis, who bowled just two overs took opened the floodgates for RCB by first dismissing Cheteshwar Pujara in his first over and then removed explosive Chris Gayle in his second over.

None of Bangalore’s batsmen made any substantial contribution with the bat, their highest scorer was Vinay Kumar (25) who also bowled decently claiming two wickets while giving away just 18 runs in his four overs. It seemed they were not able to recover from the early shocks they were subjected to by the KKR bowlers.

Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis provided a blistering start to the Kolkata innings by scoring 60 runs in 6.1 overs. Gambhir was the more explosive of the two as he struck the fastest fifty of the IPL 5 in just 28 deliveries.

Kallis dismissal brought Manvinder Bisla to the crease who struck three sixes and two fours in his 46 off just 29 balls as KKR moved to 123/1 from 13 overs.

However come fourteenth over and their innings went off track as they started losing wickets in quick succession.

Their top three batsmen scored 122 runs between them and their next five added just 15 runs with an interesting sequence of scoring that read 1, 2,3,4 and 5 (from fourth to eight number respectively).

At one stage they were looking good to score anywhere between 180-190 but they ended on a par score of 165 runs. They must have felt they were 20-25 runs short.

However, the scored proved too much for the Royals as they lost the match by 42 runs.

Views ::118 Pune: Kings XI Punjab needs to train harder to get their campaign back on track, captain Adam Gilchrist said after his team`s second successive loss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Sunday night.

Kings XI suffered a 22-run defeat at the hands of the Pune Warriors at the newly inaugurated stadium Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium here.

Gilchrist felt that in a long tournament there was scope to make a comeback and their main focus would be on addressing that issues.

"We need to train hard and turn it around. We can go through a form slump in this kind of long tournament and our prime purpose is to arrest it and make a comeback," said Gilchrist.

The former Australian wicketkeeper felt that giving away too many runs towards the end and a poor start was the cause for their loss.

"We gave away 30 runs too many, the ten minutes of madness towards the end of our bowling and bad calls towards the start of our batting cost us the game," he said.

Meanwhile, a happy captain of the Pune Warriors, Sourav Ganguly, was delighted with his team`s performance.

He praised both the bowlers and the batsman for a job well done but felt that there was still a lot of time left in the tournament and that anything could happen.

"We bowled well and also batted well towards the end. The late onslaught took us to 160 plus but it was certainly a 150 pitch. The crowd was fantastic as it has been the case in the IPL. Still a long way to go in the tournament," he said.

Thumbnail India win gold in Asian Grand Prix archery
Views ::153 Kolkata: India made a rich haul of one gold, three silver and a bronze medal in the individual section of the first Asian Grand Prix archery tournament at Bangkok Saturday.

Two teenage sensations, Chittibomma Jignas and National champion Rajat Chauhan, combined to give India 1-2 in the men`s compound event, according to information received here.

In an all-Indian final, the 18-year-old Services` archer subdued Chauhan in the tie-breaker after the two tied at 144-144. Both hit the bull`s eye but Jignas` arrow was found to be closer to the centre and gave him the second international gold after the silver he bagged at the third Asian Grand Prix at Dhaka in May last.

It was a remarkable show by Rajashtan boy Chauhan, who reached the final on his maiden international assignment, after having emerged national champion in all the three age groups: sub-junior, junior and senior in the same year.

In the semi-finals, Chauhan ousted Nguyen at 149-147 and Jignas eliminated compatriot Ritul Chatterjee 147-143.
It could have been a clean sweep by the Indians had Chatterjee not lost the bronze play-off to Nguyen Tien Cuong of Vietnam at 143-147.

India`s quest to win the most coveted events of all, the recurve division, did not come off. The country`s two final entries, Mangal Singh Champia and Chekrovolu Swuro, have not done well in individual events over the years. That they managed to win silver medals was indeed praiseworthy.

Champia came up against a vastly experienced Romain Girouille of France in the men`s recurve final where the two shared the five sets to tie the score at 5-5. In the one-arrow tie-breaker, the Frenchman shot a nine to the Indian`s eight in a touch and go contest.

Earlier, Champia won against Spain`s Elias Cuesta by 7-3 set points in the semifinals.

Chekrovolu, who held an upper hand in the women`s recurve final against Ren Hayakawa of Japan, erred at the beginning of the third set. After taking the first two sets and a commanding 4-0 set points, the Indian needed just one more set to win the gold. Chekrovolu`s first arrow of the third set hit the seven point ring which unnerved the Indian.

Ren shot a 10 and a nine to take the set. Chekrovolu cracked in the fourth set shooting 8,9,9 to her opponent`s 10,8,10. The deciding set was a touch and go affair with the confident Japanese winning it in the end.

In the semis, Chekrovolu edged past Urangungalag Bishindee of Mongolia in the tie-break after both shared the five sets to tie the set score at 5-5. In the tie-breaker, the Indian`s bull`s eye was found to be closer to the centre than the Mongolian`s shot.
Both the Indian entries in the women`s compound bowed out in the semi final. Jhano Hansdah lost to ultimate gold medal winner Aung Ngeain of Myanmar 142-145 and Gagandeep Kaur fell to silver medallist Nurfatehah Mat Salleh Fatin of Malaysia 141-143. In the battle for bronze, Jhano prevailed over her much younger opponent in the tie-breaker after a 139-139 tie. Jhano broke the stalemate by hitting the bull`s eye while Gagandeep collected only 8.
The team finals will be gone through Sunday.
