Thumbnail India Takes The Lead Against China In Internet User Additions
Views ::394 ndia is supposed to have the fastest growing Internet market among the BRIC nations according to a report by Industry body ASSOCHAM and research firm Comscore. They released a collaborative report which suggests that India is growing very fast, having added some 18 million Internet users during the last year. That is certainly a very increase and India ranks ahead of other BRIC nations Brazil, Russia and China.
here seems to be a sort of boom in the Internet demographics with 75% of the Indian Internet users being in the age group of 15-34.  The report says that the annual rate of growth in terms users is at 41% annually and could reach 124 million users next July.

The report also points out that the time spent by Indians on the Internet has increased by 33% over the period of one year. The total minutes spent by all Indian Internet users have amounted to 48 billion minutes! People are surfing and accessing 70 billion pages a month these days as opposed to 54.6 billion pages in July 2011.  The top five categories in terms of Internet surfing are e-commerce, social networks, search, entertainment and news.

hina, Russia and Brazil are lagging behind with 14 million, 10 million and 3.1 million user additions respectively. The Internet is China is very closely guarded by the Chinese Government and this has given rise to a completely different ecosystem in the country. Brazil and Russia don’t have any limitations on the Internet.  The reason for such increase in Indian stats may be due to the people embracing social networking and e-commerce, especially those from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities as well. Mobile internet usage has made getting onto the Internet at anytime in the day a possibility. It is affordable too! This has attracted more people to the Internet. The growth is going to be consistent as there are still many more left in the country who have to still experience the Internet.

Thumbnail Evaluation: Samsung Galaxy Beam
Views ::389 A smartphone's screen is way too small when you want to share a video or photo with friends. That's why fitting a pico projector into a phone has been tried so many times with varying degrees of success. The problem is that doing this considerably increases bulk and noticeably decreases battery life.

Plus, all the projector phones available so far have been feature phones — not based on a smartphone operating system. The LED-based projection system has so far been more of a gimmick rather than a usable feature. The Galaxy Beam is different though. It is India's first smartphone with built in projector.

Right at the outset, we think that the Beam is a good attempt at keeping things simple, attractive and making it perfectly usable as a day-to-day phone. That the projection quality is impressive is just icing on the cake. Look at it from the side and you won't be able to tell that there's a projector in there. The projector lens is on top of the phone, covered by a glass panel (but there is no lens cap). It has a total brightness of 15 lumens and a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels.

These numbers may not seem that impressive, but you need to consider that we're talking about a phone that weighs just 145 grams and is just 12.5mm thick. Under the right conditions (with low ambient lighting and with a flat white surface ), the phone can project an image up to 50-inchs in size (diagonal size).

Interestingly, the projector can also double up as a flashlight — one that projects a perfectly rectangular lightbeam and in your choice of colour. To start the projector up, you need to press the dedicated button on the side of the phone. It starts up almost immediately and you can proceed to adjust the various settings, starting with the focus and orientation (landscape or portrait). A nice bedside stand is included in the box, which also serves as a charger for an additional battery.

The battery life when using it as a phone is roughly a day or two. Running it solely as a projector, you should get about three and a half hours of use. Two of our main complaints with the Beam are that it does not come with a stand, tripod or mount of any kind for projector use.

You'll have to figure out a way to prop it up to get the ideal height and angle to display on a wall. And secondly, the loudspeaker is far too feeble to be of any use when you're using it as a projector. To use it with multimedia, you will necessarily need some sort of external powered speaker system (either a wired or Blueooth speaker will do).

It boils down to this — as a phone, you're not getting the best spec there is — but it is the best projector phone out there. If you prefer to keep things separate, you could get a standalone projector like 3M's MP180 ( 29,990) which can project videos or photos from internal memory or micro SD card and a separate Android smartphone.

Gold scales new high at Rs. 31,850 on firm global cues
Views ::441  Gold today broke all previous records to touch a fresh all-time high of Rs. 31,850 per 10 grams, buoyed by brisk buying by traders in tandem with strong global cues.

The precious metal, which has been on an upward swing since last two weeks, shot up by Rs. 240 to Rs. 31,850 per 10 grams in the national capital region, surpassing previous record of Rs. 31,725 set on September 1.

Silver followed suit and gained Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 60,200 per kg.

The trading sentiment bolstered after gold gained to the highest level in more than five months in overseas markets as global data strengthened the case for more central bank measures to boost growth, increasing demand for the metal.

In Singapore, gold rose by 0.3 per cent to USD 1,697.20 an ounce, a record level since March 13 this year.

On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity climbed by Rs. 240 each to Rs. 31,850 and Rs. 31,650 per 10 grams, respectively. Sovereigns held steady at Rs. 24,950 per piece of eight grams.

Similarly, silver ready recorded a handsome gains of Rs. 1200 to Rs. 60,200 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs. 980 to Rs. 61,780 per kg. Silver coins jumped up by Rs. 1000 to Rs. 75,000 for buying and Rs. 76,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Thumbnail Microsoft unveils a new logo, first change in 25 years
Views ::460 Microsoft on Thursday unveiled a new corporate logo "to express the company's diverse portfolio of products" as the US tech giant ramps up for a series of big launches.

The new logo, updated for the first time in 25 years, features a square which contains four separate colored squares. The old logo had a similar look but the squares appeared deformed as if part of a flag waving in the wind.

The move comes with Microsoft ramping up for its Windows 8 platform and its first tablet computer, called Surface. The company is also making an aggressive effort to gain ground in the smartphone market.

"It's been 25 years since we've updated the Microsoft logo and now is the perfect time for a change," said Microsoft brand strategy manager Jeff Hansen.

"This is an incredibly exciting year for Microsoft as we prepare to release new versions of nearly all of our products. From Windows 8 to Windows Phone 8 to Xbox services to the next version of Office, you will see a common look and feel across these products providing a familiar and seamless experience on PCs, phones, tablets and TVs.

"This wave of new releases is not only a reimagining of our most popular products, but also represents a new era for Microsoft, so our logo should evolve to visually accentuate this new beginning."

The logo also includes the name Microsoft in the Segoe font which is used in products and marketing communications, along with the new squares.

"The symbol is important in a world of digital motion," Hansen said. "The symbol's squares of color are intended to express the company's diverse portfolio of products."

The new logo is being used starting Thursday on the Microsoft.com website and in three Microsoft retail stores today.

"It will sign off all of our television ads globally," Hansen said.

"And it will support our products across various forms of marketing... We're excited about the new logo, but more importantly about this new era in which we're reimagining how our products can help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential."

The colors in logo stands for

red = Windows phone

green = xbox

blue = Windows

yellow = office

Thumbnail Lakshmi Mittal's global steel giant ArcelorMittal scales back
Views ::235 London: Steel is a notoriously volatile industry. But four years ago, Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian-born tycoon, appeared to have mastered the business.

He was still aglow from his 2006 victory in an epic takeover battle for his nearest rival, Arcelor of Luxembourg, which made the merged company, ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel maker by far. With a fast-growing world economy hungry for steel, ArcelorMittal reported operating income of nearly $12 billion for 2008.

Things are different now, with Europe in a deep economic funk and once-roaring construction markets like India and China also slowing. Last year, the company had operating income of $4.9 billion. And on Wednesday, it reported second-quarter operating income of $1.1 billion, on sales of $22.48 billion. While the sales were down 10 percent from a year earlier, income was down more than 50 percent as the cost of the industry's raw material, iron ore, rose even as steel prices slumped.

"Clearly, this performance is not acceptable at all," Mr. Mittal said by telephone on Wednesday, while noting that the severity of the various downturns had been unexpected.

The company has already started curtailing production in Europe to match reduced demand. And it is bracing for resistance from unions and governments to other planned cost cuts.

Those include the major wage and benefit concessions it is seeking from workers in the United States, where it employs thousands of workers at 12 major facilities in states including Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Back in the boom times, Mr. Mittal's strategy was to consolidate a fragmenting industry. Putting production into fewer hands would make it easier to adjust output to cushion the cyclical downturns that have always played havoc with steel makers. Among the American companies he bought were Inland Steel and the International Steel Group, which owned plants once operated by companies like LTV and Weirton Steel.

Beginning with the global recession in 2009, though, ArcelorMittal has faced one setback after another.

The latest and perhaps the most serious hazard is the protracted euro zone financial turmoil that has all but killed demand for steel in Western Europe. ArcelorMittal, with headquarters in Luxembourg, produced more than a third of its worldwide crude steel in Europe last year. Nearly 100,000 of the company's 260,000 employees work in Europe.

ArcelorMittal's share price has fallen steeply since 2008, reducing the value of the Mittal family's controlling stake of 40 percent to $9 billion from an estimated $55 billion in 2008.

The benchmark price of European steel in 2008 was about 850 euros ($1,030 at today's exchange rates) a metric ton. By last month, that price was 573 euros, according to Meps, a consulting firm in Sheffield, England.

And the lower the price drops, the more reluctant buyers are to commit, "because the material they have in stock is worth less as each week passes," said Peter Fish, the chairman of Meps.

Inexpensive Chinese steel, heavily subsidized by its government, has also been a big drag on global prices. Even as steel production in Western Europe and the United States has declined over the last five years, China's output has grown about 60 percent, and China now makes 46 percent of the world's steel.

Mr. Mittal said almost all Chinese companies lost money in the first half of the year. "That is good news in the sense that they will have to work on restructuring the steel industry," eventually putting profit ahead of volume, he said.

But largely because of China's ravenous appetite for iron ore, the industry's main raw material, its price has quadrupled since 2006, to about $134 a metric ton.

"The steel makers like ArcelorMittal are caught in the middle," said Jeff Largey, an analyst at Macquarie in London. "On the one hand, the end markets are weak and they don't have any pricing power. On the other hand, they can't do anything about high raw materials prices driven by demand from China."

Mr. Mittal started out in the 1970s building and operating a minimill in Indonesia. He built his fortune in the next three decades by buying and fixing a network of gigantic but poorly performing plants in places like Kazakhstan, Romania and Mexico.

But now Mr. Mittal finds himself in a tough fight just to control costs and reduce the company's $22 billion in debt. In Europe, he has idled nine of his 25 blast furnaces, the huge machines that turn iron ore into liquid metal.

And in contrast to his earlier acquisition spree, he is now selling properties. ArcelorMittal recently sold two North American steel foundation businesses called Skyline Steel and Astralloy to a rival, Nucor, for $605 million - part of $2.7 billion in divestitures since September.
Because of its mergers, ArcelorMittal has "a lot of low-hanging fruit," said Wen Li, an analyst at Credit Sights in New York.

The company also benefits from its global reach. The mills in the United States are doing better than those in Europe, thanks to demand from heavy-equipment makers like Caterpillar and for steel pipe to feed the North American shale gas boom. And unlike its rivals, ArcelorMittal has its own major iron ore operations, helping buffer high prices.

In Europe, where the company faces its deepest problems, it says it wants to keep its best plants - like those in Ghent, Belgium and Dunkirk, France - running at high rates while sidelining the poor performers. But ArcelorMittal probably needs to close some plants permanently, analysts say. And as the automakers know too well, closing plants in Europe requires months, if not years, of talks.

Labor problems are also looming in the United States. The company and the United Steelworkers union are now in intensive talks in Pittsburgh, trying to reach a new agreement before the current contract covering 12,500 workers expires at the end of August.

ArcelorMittal is pushing for lower costs and more flexible work rules that the union says would add up to wage and benefit reductions of $28 an hour.

The company says the workers make an average of $170,855 a year in pay and benefits, of which $82,471 is gross pay. A union spokesman, Anthony Montana, said the company's figure was "an inflated noncash cost calculation," but he would not provide a union estimate.

The union says that in addition to upfront compensation cuts, the company also wants the right to cut wages during periods of reduced operation. The company is proposing cuts in retirement benefits, too, seeking to eliminate retiree health care for employees hired after Sept. 1, 2012, and switch those employees to a 401(k) from a pension plan.

Mr. Largey, the Macquarie analyst, said the company might think it was worth enduring a strike if needed to reduce costs.

But an ArcelorMittal spokesman, William C. Steers, said on Wednesday, "We are optimistic we will reach a fair agreement because ultimately the union and the company want the same thing - a successful business throughout the cycle that provides good job security and industry-leading pay for industry-leading performance."

Wipro Q1 net at Rs 1580 crore, stock falls on muted growth forecast
Views ::170 Wipro, India's third largest software services exporter, met Street expectations in the June quarter as customers outsourced more work to the company to cut their operational expenses.

Net profit rose 6.7 per cent sequentially to Rs 1,580 crore in the June quarter against Rs 1,481 crore in the March quarter. Rupee depreciation boosted profit. The company reported a forex gain of Rs 17 crore. Revenues from IT services jumped 9.5 per cent sequentially to Rs 8,314 crore over Rs 7,589.7 crore in the March quarter.

However, revenues in dollar terms were a disappointment. Wipro said revenues in dollar terms declined 1.36 per cent sequentially on the back of a $25 million loss because of cross currency impact. June quarter sales stood at $1515 million against $1536 million in the March quarter.

The stock dropped over 4 per cent in  early trade on the back of weak growth forecast for the September quarter. The company has forecast flat growth in the July - September quarter, which affected the stock negatively. The company said revenues in dollar terms might be in the range of $1520 - $1550 million, implying a sequential growth of 0.3 to 2.3 per cent, which is at the lower end of analysts' expectations of 2-3 per cent growth.

Wipro declined 3 per cent to close at Rs 346 on the BSE, underperforming the broader BSE IT index that fell 0.7 per cent. The stock was the top loser on the 50-share Nifty index.

Operating profit margins for IT services, a key measure of profitability, expanded to 21 per cent against 20.7 per cent in the March quarter.

"Wipro numbers are weak. We expected IT services to grow 0.5 per cent sequentially, but they have reported a decline. Volumes and pricing have declined sequentially. Despite 11 per cent depreciation in the rupee, margins have gone up by only 30 basis points sequentially," Abhishek Shindadkar, IT analyst at ICICI Securities told NDTV Profit.

Wipro, which also makes computer hardware, soaps and toiletries reported higher than expected net sales at Rs 10,653 crore, a jump of 7.9 per cent over Rs 9,869 crore in the March quarter. A poll conducted by NDTV Profit expected sales at Rs 10,509 crore.

The company added 37 new clients and 2,632 employees in IT services in the June quarter.

Wipro and its larger rivals Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services are part of India's $100 billion software and back-office services sector that earns about 70 per cent of its revenue from the United States and Europe. The IT industry faces diminishing hopes of an early revival in demand as their biggest markets, the United States and Europe, grapple with an uncertain economic and political climate.

Earlier this month, Infosys Ltd, the no. 2 software exporter, made a bigger-than-expected cut in its revenue growth forecast for the current fiscal year. But sector leader Tata Consultancy Services Ltd beat expectations with a 38 per cent rise in quarterly net profit.

Thumbnail India's youngest CEO and Co. President?
Views ::225 Meet Shravan Kumaran and his younger brother Sanjay Kumaran – two of the youngest promoters of a company. Aged only 12 and 10 respectively, Shravan is the Co-Founder and President of Go Dimensions while his brother is Co-Founder and CEO.

When most adults have trouble understanding Java code, these two kids have used the code to build mobile applications. The brothers have together developed four apps for the Apple Store, which have been downloaded more than 10,000 times from 20 countries.

Clad in grey suits and ties, these two highly-confident children demonstrated their apps to the media, on the iOS and Android platforms, for games, education and entertainment.

Students of Vaels Billabong High International School, both Shravan’s and Sanjay’s interest in computers started early at home when their father got them a desktop computer. Starting with Paint and games on the PC, the two started to make presentations at school and teachers encouraged them to do more. That’s how they turned into mobile app developers.

In the CatchMeCop game application, a convict escapes from prison and there is a nationwide hunt for the convict. The convict has to run through a desert, a beach and a maze to outsmart the cops. There are multiple levels of this application, which saw nearly 2,000 downloads in the first month of development. In fact, tech media Web site CNET has reviewed this application too.

The other three applications are Alphabet board, a learning app for the iPhone and iPad; Prayer Planet (for religious prayers of various communities) and Colour Palette, a learning app for kids to learn colours.

The apps are free for download, says Shravan. The company will make money on advertisements in their apps, he said.

Thumbnail India's missile defence shield ready: Defence Research and Development Organisation
Views ::227 New Delhi:  India has developed its own missile defence shield which can be put in place at short notice to protect at least two cities, bringing the country at par with an elite group of few nations. The shield, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been tested successfully and an incoming ballistic missile with the range of up to 2,000 kms can be destroyed.

"The Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield is now mature. We are ready to put phase one in place and it can be put in very short time," DRDO chief V K Saraswat told PTI in an interview.

He said the shield, as part of phase one of the programme, can be put in place in two cities in the country, where the infrastructure is available. However, the two places have not yet been identified and the selection will be made at the political level. The DRDO used variants of Prithvi missiles as simulated targets and successfully intercepted missiles in test-firings.

The system was first test-fired in November 2006 elevating India into the elite club of countries to have successfully developed an Anti-ballistic missile system, after United States, Russia and Israel.

"We have carried out six successful launches and demonstrated the capability for 2,000 km targets. We have demonstrated it in two layers that is endo-atmospheric (inside the Earth's atmosphere) and exo-atmospheric (outside the Earth's atmosphere)," Mr Saraswat said.

The DRDO chief said the Indian missile defence system is comparable with the US Patriot 3 system, which was successfully used during the 1990 Gulf War against Iraq.

He said all the elements such as long-range radars and tracking devices, real-time datalink and mission control system required for the missile system have been "realised" successfully.

Under the phase two of the project, the premier defence research agency would upgrade the system to handle ballistic missiles with range of 5,000 km. This phase is expected to be ready by 2016.

The system required for phase-II of the project is being developed, he said, adding that for this purpose, ships are being built from where the target missiles would be launched.

Talking about the advancement of the system, he said the missile defence shield has been "automated" to an extent where human intervention would be required only if the mission has to be aborted.

As part of its efforts to protect itself from enemy missiles, India is developing this two-tier BMD which can intercept enemy missiles at altitudes of 80 km and 150 km.

The DRDO is thinking of intercepting the missiles at higher altitudes as it would give it more response time in case the first attempt is a miss and the second layer of the system can be put into action.

From August 2011, foreign carriers operating to the US with at least one aircraft of 30 or more seats have been required to adopt contingency plans for lengthy tarmac delays as well as customer service plans, and to post these plans on their websites.

US carriers have been covered by this requirement since April 2010, the Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Also both US carriers and foreign carriers with a website that sells tickets to US consumers have been required to include a prominent hyperlink on their homepages that takes viewers directly to a page that shows all fees for optional services the carrier charges, including baggage fees.

Air India failed to post its customer service, tarmac delay contingency plans and provide a link to its optional fees by the required date, the statement added.

Thumbnail RBI cuts rates first time in 3 years.
Views ::228 Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said inflation was likely to remain near current levels during the fiscal year, with risks still to the upside, sounding a cautious note a day before it is expected to cut its policy interest rate for the first time in three years.

Earlier on Monday, India reported annual wholesale price index (WPI) inflation for March at 6.89 per cent, mainly driven by higher food prices, exceeding forecasts.

"While inflation has moderated, risks to inflation are still on the upside," the RBI said in a report.
RBI may cut interest rates for the first time in 3 years

"Monetary policy would ... need to support growth without risking external balance or inflation by excessively fuelling demand," the report said.

The RBI has left interest rates on hold after raising them 13 times between March 2010 and October 2011. It disappointed many investors a month ago when it left rates unchanged, accompanied by strong anti-inflationary comments.

On Monday, the central bank said inflationary drivers remain, with inflation "likely to remain sticky at about current levels" in the fiscal year that started this month.

"Price pressures persist with considerable suppressed inflation in oil, electricity, coal and fertilisers, (and) the incomplete pass through of rupee depreciation," it said.

The government heavily subsidises fuel and fertilisers, and is expected eventually to free up fuel prices in order to ease its fiscal burden, which would add to inflation.

Most analysts polled by Reuters last week expected the RBI to begin its easing cycle on Tuesday with a 25 basis point cut in the policy repo rate to 8.25 per cent, while a minority expected it to bring down the cash reserve ratio for banks by 25 basis points to 4.50 per cent.

An RBI survey of economists forecast the Indian economy to grow at 7.2 per cent in the fiscal year that began on April 1, little changed from the 7.3 per cent forecast in the last survey three months ago.

Growth in Asia's third-largest economy slowed to 6.1 per cent in the three months to December, the weakest in nearly three years. The government has forecast growth in the fiscal year that ended on March 31 to dip below 7 per cent for the first time in three years.

Bharti Airtel launches India's first 4G service
Views ::269 Airtel the leading telecom operator in India is shortly going to launch 4G services in India according to NDTV profit. Airtel will start their 4G services from kolkata telecom circle from March end or April 1st or 2nd week.

The interesting fact is Apple just launched their 4G (LTE) capable tablet, and now Airtel may kick-start their 4G services with the launch of New ipad in India.

Airtel secured 4G spectrum in 4 circle Maharashtra, Kolkata, Karnataka and punjab circle and successfully conducted 4G trial in all circle.

Airtel may also shortly launch 4G services in other circles too like Maharashtra where they recently appointed NSN To Manage 4G Network, also Karnataka and Punjab after initial launch from Kolkata circle.

Airtel 4G with LTE technology will allow user to download data at very high-speed typically 50 Mbps or technically it is 10 times more than 3G speed. The launch of commercial 4G LTE services this year will allow Airtel customers a much improved internet experience when using bandwidth-intensive applications like HD video streaming and gaming with faster response times or low latency.

However there is no 4G capable mobile or device available in India other than New 4G ipad if that launches shortly here in India. Also it is hardly possible that operator will come up with affordable tariff plans.

"Of the 150 million phones sold last year in India, about 10 million were smartphones. The category is growing at 70 percent and we estimate that by 2015, one in two phones sold would be a smartphone. This is the potential that we see in the smartphone category in India," Sony Mobile Communications India Managing Director P Balaji told reporters here.

As part of the Sony group, the company is in a stronger position to bring connected entertainment experiences to consumers in India, he added.

"Bringing together the best of Sony's electronics, networked services and content, the Xperia smartphone is a cornerstone to enjoy entertainent in this connected world," he said.

To introduce Xperia smartphones, Sony has launched one of its largest brand and marketing campaigns in India called 'Made of Imagination'.

Balaji, however, declined to comment on the investments in the campaign or the number of devices to be launched this year.

Sony Mobile Communications Tuesday launched Xperia S handset in the Indian market at a price of Rs 32,549, along with three other devices.
